I’ve actually got a tip for sleeping.
I was a chronic insomniac ever since I can remember. This is due to anxiety issues. Major anxiety. Even with Valium I was prescribed (for anxiety, not sleep), my mind would just race around in circles or tangents or whatever. Sometimes I’d get up the next day and not know if I had slept at all during the night. It was like, okay, I might have slept between 4:30 and 5:30, maybe. This was usually the time I’d give up and say, well, I give up! (That’s not my tip.) I was very active, in fact I ran twice in the Longbeach Marathon (both times just over 4 hours). The nights that I slept well were when I drank heavily in the night. I get up feeling terrible, but at least I didn’t toss and turn all night. I’d tried a couple of books on sleeping. Two, I think. And they both made me more self-conscious of my sleep.
Now I smoke – uggh. I’m still drink alot on the weekends And I don’t excercise at all. Living in the burbs of Colorado is not as conducive to excercise as you’d think. (I miss the East Coast. I’d just run down side streets and whatnot.) However I’ve been sleeping GREAT for about a year now. The reason? Well…let’s see. My Sister went on vacation with her husband to Japan. I was majorly jealous since I’ve always been big into those Chinese characters – Kanji. When she came back she related to me that she was astounded to see people sleeping in the streets, on the subway, wherever. Right in the middle of the day. This wasn’t exactly news to me, since I knew that China is known as the Land of Nod and I’d heard stories about Japanese soldiers snoozing away during battles or even sleepwalking on marches.
So anyway, to make this short, I ran into a technique to learn the Kanji symbols. It’s very straightforward. Here is an example:
一 >>> 二 >>> 三 >>> 王 >>> 全 >>> 金 >>> 針 >>> 士 >>> 仕 >>> 人 >>> 大 >>> 天 >>> 矢 >>> 医 >>> 口 >>> 曰 >>> 日 >>> 旧 >>> 工 >>> 江 >>> 汁 >>> 土 >>> 幸 >>> 羊 >>> 美 >>> 夫 >>> 失 >>> 牛 >>> 生 >>> …
Get it? Each one is linked to the next. I just run this list through my head. I’m studying while I think – or as I’d like to think of it DREAM about the kanji using the list above. I just have this list in my head. And after about 50 or so, sometimes much less then 50 I’m in the Land of Nod. It really works! You probably have to be big into Kanji for this to work, but it is such a beautiful language(?). A beautiful something or other that it takes me into a different world. Or, rather, it makes my thinking turn naturally to dreaming. If this sounds interesting I’ve got a much larger “linked list” of Kanji. Thanks Arjuna
